Seven Planet

Seven Planet is the Old Town-Chinatown resource for everything green, renewable, and eco-friendly – any word you can think of that describes an item, a tool, or a gift that’s good for the planet. The Seven Planet building actually consists of three separate stores. First, is the Seven Planet store itself. To the right, just off of the entrance is Botanica. And further in the back, through an archway, you’ll find Cafe Nirvahnah. According to the mission statement...

Whole Foods

Everywhere you go across the country you’ll now see numerous organic grocery stores. Whole Foods is a huge reason behind this. Sure, Portland’s always had its locally sourced organic grocery stores, but in other places, such as Middle America, Whole Foods was among the first wave of organic food they had ever seen. Soon enough, these stores were everywhere, like Starbucks. And like Starbucks, Whole Foods encouraged competition by inspiring even more organic specialty...

Nature’s Pet

There’s a good chance that if you live in Northwest Portland, and specifically farther up in the numbers, you like to eat healthy. You want you food to be organic, and you want it to be grown within a 45 minute drive (as if you would ever drive a car for that long). That’s what’s healthy: the natural stuff. Well, why not give that all-natural treatment to your best friend, as well? With a trip to Nature’s Pet on 21st Avenue, you don’t have to feed your dog...

Dove Lewis Animal Hospital

What do you do when you accidentally cut off your thumb when making a new spice rack or paper towel holder, or what do you do when you took a ten-dollar bet on eating a year old oyster? Chances are the first place you go after either of these accidents or bad decisions is the emergency room. However, things are different when your pet gets hurt. If your dog has been vomiting all day, or your cat suddenly walks with a hitch in its step, you’ll have to wait until the...

Sniff Dog Hotel

One great thing about living in Northwest Portland is that you can be totally assured that you will never be without a place to leave your dog when you go out of town. Here’s a fun fact: Northwest Portland actually has more dog hotels than human hotels. If a friend of yours visits, he or she will have to stay in downtown, but their pooch will be right at your doorstep. Still, with as many dog hotels in the area, it’s difficult to choose the right one. Sniff Dog Hotel...

Noah’s Arf

When Noah made an ark to save himself along with his family from an impending flood that would cascade over the entire world, he was commanded to take two of every animal with him. Of course, if Noah were a Portlander, chances are he would understand the command to mean simply “two of every species of dog.” Instead of lions, elephants, and giraffes, the ark would consist of varying degrees of retrievers, bulldogs, pugs, and spaniels. Well, Northwest Portland dog...

Wonder Puppy

Looking at the sign adorning the exterior of Wonder Puppy, you may assume that perhaps this place will be able to turn your dog into a superhero on the level of Underdog or Krypto the Superdog (look it up on Wikipedia). Of course, they won’t be able to teach your dog to fly, but as anyone who has owned (or been owned) by an unruly pup knows, the ability to even make that dog learn to sit, stay, lie down, shake, speak, and roll over is practically a superhuman feat....

Dogstar

In astronomy, the dogstar, Sirius, has always been a guiding light for sailors and travelers throughout time. Its bright shine has always helped people get where they’re going. In a similar way, Dogstar in the Pearl District, on the corner of Northwest Fourteenth Avenue and Kearney Street, is a shining light for the many, many dog owners of the area. It’s a place that does a bit of everything to make your life as a dog owner (not to mention your dog’s life) easier....

Pearl Animal Hospital

Chances are, if you live in the Pearl District, you probably have a dog, cat, or some other type of animal, and you love it deeply. That’s not a stereotype, that’s the truth. Simply look around on streets such as Lovejoy, Glisan, Tenth Avenue, and Twelfth Avenue. You will see a city that is absolutely filled with dogs. The only cities that can hope to compare with Portland’s love of dogs are probably Paris and New York City. But these dogs do not raise themselves....

Lexi Dog Boutique and Social Club

When talking about dogs, Northwest Portland’s Pearl District is a warzone. It may not look it with its immaculately clean streets and brand new high rise apartment buildings, but it is. Of course, this war isn’t fought with guns or knives or bombs: it’s fought with adorable tiny sweaters, chicly-designed collars, and extendable leashes that go for miles and miles. The war is over who has the most primped and pampered dog there is. The American Kennel Club only...

Urban Fauna

Walk down any street in the Pearl District in Northwest Portland and you are guaranteed to see at least one person walking a dog. That’s a given in Portland life. It’s been said that there are more dogs in Portland than there are children. Walk around the Pearl for an hour, seeing bulldogs in sweaters after bulldogs in sweaters, it’s easy to understand where that joke comes from. Portlanders indeed love their pets. Still, when they go out of town, they need their...
