602 NW 23rd Ave
Portland, OR 97210
It is not always easy to find a bridal gown that is unique and custom made, let alone affordable. Cocoon Silk on Northwest 23rd Ave in Nob Hill has a large selection of gowns, evening wear and cocktail dresses for Portlanders who are fond of both their individuality and wallet. One can see what only skims the surface of the store’s selection, from the sizeable window display that can be seen from 23rd Ave. Amidst the many stores in Portland’s Nob Hill, the elegant and colorfully embroidered dresses stand out brightly.
Portland purists will be happy to know that while all the silk – and all in the store is silk – imported from Cambodia, it’s done so through very close ties with store. Sovanna Yun, the owner, is from Cambodia himself, and his mother owns the silk farm from which the fabric is imported. The silk is imported to Portland, and fills both of Yun’s Nob Hill stores. There is a great array of various forms of silk, each manifestation of woven material informing the design of the dress it creates.
Each dress is custom made. Portland brides will be happy to know that they can bring in their own custom designs, Sovanna and his team will happily work to create it. Each dress is alterable as well. Should someone walk into the store from the streets of Nob Hill and decide they they prefer the top of one dress and the bottom of another, Cocoon Silk is happy to oblige with a new design. The maximum price of a dress is $650, and each price includes alterations.
The specialty here is wedding gowns (the other Nob Hill locale features dresses but without a bridal focus), designed in various shades of white and ivory. Several dresses feature exquisite embroidery, in threads ranging from navy to gold to an off-white, which complements each dress. Many of the dresses travel well, especially those made with crushed silk, so if the bride should prefer a destination wedding outside of Portland, she won’t need to put much effort into steaming or dry cleaning her gown upon arrival. Silk also takes dye very well, so when the dress gets back to Portland (unless it stays in Portland to begin with), it can be worn again for alternate occasions.
Bridesmaid dresses are also available, as are children’s. The Nob Hill store offers a discount up to 20% for outfitting the bridal party. In fact, as the number of dresses purchased increases, so does the discount. Cocktail dresses are available in an array of stunning colors, and several of the bridal gowns feature detachable trains for the Portland bride who wants to dance comfortably at the reception.
The Nob Hill boutique also sports various accessories, both for bride and wedding party. Men’s ties, vests, and pocketees are a great way to round out the aesthetics of a wedding theme. Scarves and handbags abound in numerous colors and designs both for the bride and her party. As far as unique, creative Portland brides go, this Nob Hill boutique is a gem of an affordable and wonderful find!
