The Pendleton brand is one of the most famous ones to come out of Oregon. It is perhaps the most famous, notwithstanding a certain brand that features a swoosh on all of its items. Indeed, items from Pendleton Woolen Mills are known for their durability, their warmth, their timelessness, and their style. They have been an important part of pop culture in the more than a century since their inception, and even provided the namesake for a little band call the Pendletones. Of course, you probably know that band by its second name: the Beach Boys.
The Beach Boys, of course, named themselves after a wool shirt that Pendleton sold. That shirt is still around and available at the Pendleton Home store, but Pendleton Home is devoted much more to the business of owning and decorating a house while maintaining that rustic, backwoods log cabin sensibility. It is quite a transition to walk in from the corner of Broadway and Glisan to see the assorted plaids, flannels, and browns of the Pendleton Home collection.
Most of the goods at the Pendleton Home store are adorned with styles and patterns resembling those of Native Americans from across the American West. Blankets have busy patterns with zig zags cutting across them. Lamps, lampshades, pottery, and dressers all have distinctive and bright beading, each of them competing for your attention.
Recently, Pendleton has also ridden the wave of popularity of American-made fashion back into relevance in most of the country’s top fashion magazines. With this refound popularity, Pendleton has teamed up with many designers to make items as diverse as a cardigan featuring the distinct Pendleton pattern for Opening Ceremony, a denim jacket lined with blue Pendleton wool for Levi’s, and a pair of Vans slip-on sneakers with a bright orange and yellow pattern as an upper.
Pendleton Home is as fine an option as you can find in Northwest Portland for finding ways to complete your home in a warm, rustic, and inviting way while still supporting local companies.
Pendleton Home is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
