Blue Hour describes its name as meaning twilight, or any time of the day that elicits heightened emotion. Most Portlanders just know Blue Hour as that great Mediterranean restaurant in the Wieden + Kennedy building, which is also extremely true. Blue Hour is one of the Pearl District’s most centrally located restaurants, sitting on the corner of Everett St. and Thirteenth Avenue, with its stylized clock beckoning all who drive, bike, or walk by in through its doors. And locals have plenty of reason to go through those doors.
The appearance of Blue Hour is nearly as stunning as the intricately-designed Wieden + Kennedy lobby next door. It features high ceilings and mirrored walls, to make the room feel that much bigger, and chandeliers that are designed to look like halos of light. Its outdoor patio is one of the best in the city, sitting on one of Portland’s busiest thoroughfares, giving diners plenty of opportunity for people-watching. Beyond that, it also has outdoor heating, meaning that while other places close up their patios during the cold months, Blue Hour can continue on.
Blue Hour fits two different sides of human food cravings: the comfort and the classy. The classy side is the Blue Hour dinner menu, which is served in the linen-table-clothed dining room. The dinner menu is a mix of classic Italian and French dishes, with more of an emphasis on the French. The menu does change throughout the year to fit seasonal vegetables, but you can expect plenty of seafood, in addition to classics such as lamb and skirt steak.
The bar menu, on the other hand, is comfort food done with the same care that Blue Hour uses for its haute cuisine. It becomes that much more impressive during the Blue Hour happy hour, which runs daily from 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Here, you can try many of the restaurant’s items, such as its burgers, salads, and pizzas without paying more than five dollars. An added bonus is that beers and cocktails are reduced in price, as well.
Blue Hour is open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. and dinner nightly from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. The bar is open all day Sunday through Friday and after dinner, as well.
