With all the rain that falls throughout the year in Portland, you would figure that people by now would have simply evolved some defense mechanisms for it. Perhaps feet would change into rubber Wellington boots whenever the humidity jumped above fifty percent. Maybe eyebrows would extend and retract to make sure that water doesn’t get into people’s eyes. Maybe hair would make a complicated umbrella shape to keep your clothes and your messenger bag dry. Until human evolution does take care of that nasty issue of defense against the elements, Portlanders are lucky to have hat shops such as Bonnet.
Interestingly enough, bonnets are in somewhat short supply at Bonnet. Sure you’ll find a couple pieces of the headgear favored by travelers along the Oregon Trail and Little House on the Prarie, but for the most part, you’ll find a rotating cast of some of the most current and fashionable hats around. Even better, it’s a place for everybody. Yes, while the bonnet is a hat traditionally for women, Bonnet has items that are exclusively for men, items that are exclusively for women, and items that could work for either sex. Bonnet is a must-stop shop during any walking tour through the Pearl, as trying on a multitude of hats is one of those uniquely weird pleasures.
Each season at Bonnet brings a new collection of hats. During the winter, you’ll see many more beanies and knit caps of all designs, featuring patterns, pom poms, and ear flaps. During the summer, the knit caps are rotated out in favor of floppy sun hats for women, and dapper straw fedoras and panama hats for men. No matter what, throughout the year, you can get some of the mainstays of cranial fashion such as felt fedoras, driving caps, and berets. If you want to get your Magritte on, they have bowlers, as well.
Bonnet is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
