So, where do you go if places such as Safeway or Albertson’s don’t have the right stock of organic or local produce and meat for you? Your first thought would probably be more high-end stores such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. They’ve become major chains due to their commitment to healthy food and a large selection of that food. Well, what if those places don’t have the cut of meat you desire, or the cheese you need to complete your party? You could just get something else, something that’s less than. Or, you could head down the block to City Market N.W.
Yes, City Market N.W. is the place to go to when you need to be absolutely sure you’ll find the exact ingredient you want for your recipe. It’s found at the corner of Northwest 21st Avenue and Johnson Street. This grocery store is owned by Portland-area Mediterranean food company Pastaworks. You may have seen some of the chain’s other locations in the Mississippi and Hawthorne neighborhoods. The bright orange building with the stylized sign in front may not look like much from the outside, but with this grocery store, it’s the inside the counts.
First off, depending on your dietary preferences, your eyes will be drawn to the butcher block or the cheese counter. Fresh fish caught earlier in the day may be thing that draws your attention. Maybe it’s the ridiculous selection Italian meats and sausages on display. Perhaps its even that slow-cooked porchetta that is parked in the window. Then again, maybe you just need some organic vegetables. Beyond all those specialty items, City Market N.W. acquits itself perfectly as a normal grocery store, as well, with plenty in stock to fulfill whatever you need during your weekly trip. The fact that it also has a wine, cheese, and meat selection that would make Roberto Benigni proud is merely a bonus.
City Market N.W. is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.
