Ken’s Artisan Bakery is one of the standard bearers of baked goods in Portland. In high-class restaurants across the city, you’ll often see the words “bread from Ken’s Artisan Bakery” printed proudly on menus. Sure, these restaurants could try to have their own homemade bread. They probably have cooks on staff that are talented enough to do so. Then, of course, they taste the stuff from Ken’s Artisan Bakery, and decide making their own isn’t worth it. Why make your own pretty good bread when you can simply buy and serve the great bread from Ken’s Artisan Bakery. And if you think Ken’s Artisan bread you get at restaurants is good, wait until you go to the source.
That source is located among the bank of restaurants along 21st Avenue, where the busy street crosses with Flanders. It was opened in 2001 after years of planning and travel by Ken Forkish. After falling in love with the taste of classically made bread in France, Ken traveled across the world to learn how to make bread in a variety of ways. Over the years, the place has only grown in esteem, with Ken and the bakery featured in magazines and newspapers, along with appearances on the Food Network.
All of the bread and pastries that you’ll find at Ken’s Artisan Bakery is hand-made on site. The styles of bread you’ll find there are taken from all over the world, reflecting Ken’s worldwide training. There are heavier whites and wheat bread. There are baguettes and ciabattas that are ideal for dipping in oil and vinegar. Then there are the pastries that are constantly being rotated through filled with fresh fruits and smelling of butter, sugar, and vanilla. Every Monday, Ken’s Artisan Bakery stays open late in order to fix pizza in the wood burning oven. These pizzas night have proven so popular that there is now a Ken’s Artisan Pizza in Southeast Portland.
Ken’s Artisan Bakery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., Sunday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Monday from 7 a.m. until 9:30 p.m.
