You probably haven’t seen M Bar before. Even if you’ve driven down 21st Avenue a hundred times, it’s easy to miss the place, even if it is located in one of the busiest restaurant and bar areas in Portland, a city that is obsessed with restaurants and bars. It is tucked in the Easter-colored Buck Apartment Building near the corner of Glisan Street and 21st Avenue. The only way it is really identified is a tiny white sign (it probably measures only 2 feet by 1 foot) that pops out from the wall. Still, it’s smallness works to its advantage. M Bar, when you find it, is a discovery that is yours, and not many people know about it.
It’s probably a good thing that not too many people know about M Bar, as it only has seating for 30 people at the very most, with only a few tables and a small bar. Still, that lends to M Bar’s intimacy. It feels more like a cool party that someone invited you to rather than a bar. The apartment building location, the homey atmosphere, and the candles burning on the tables just make you feel like you should be there. And after all, when you’re going out to a bar, don’t you just want a sense of belonging.
M Bar is a wine and beer bar. You’re not going to find any crazy liquor concoctions here. If you want that, you can go around the corner to M Bar. Instead, you’ll find a small, but carefully curated wine list to choose from and two rotating local beers on tap. The secret of M Bar is certainly out during its happy hour, which runs daily from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., marking one of the latest happy hours you’ll find in the city. You won’t get much in the way of cheap food, but pints of beer drop down to $3 and there’s a wine of the day that is $3 a glass. Yes, M Bar is the local bar you want to make part of your life. Just keep it down.
M Bar is open daily from 6 p.m. until 2:30 a.m.
