When you see the sign for Portland Modern on 21st Avenue in between Johnson and Irving Street, you probably will think one thing: “Oh, it’s another modern furniture store. Don’t they have like twenty of those in the Pearl District already?” Looking at the sign with its stark white coloring and stylized lettering, along with its unusual placement in the basement of the Irving Street Condominiums, your first thought feels even more confirmed. Then, you take the trip down the steps, and Portland Modern is something completely different than what you expected.
Yes, the goods in stock at Portland Modern are certainly modern in style, but it’s not the modern you are thinking of. The goods at Portland Modern are “mid-century modern.” Think more Mad Men and less of Ikea. The store is divided into two sections, separated by a long hallway full of electrical meters, which adds to the ambiance of feeling like you’ve stumbled into a science fiction movies from the 1960s. The furniture section includes an eclectic selection of all sorts of couches, armoires, dressers, tables, and silverware. Of particular note, though, are the old appliances and electronics. They have blenders that are straight out of the 1960s, all chrome and glass. There are old stereos in stock with classically stylish turntables to match.
Then, when you head to the other half of Portland Modern, you’ll see a slightly smaller room stocked with an impressive selection of vintage clothing. The first thing you’ll notice is the large amount of boots, which line the walkway as you descend into the vintage section. Men at Portland Modern can marvel at the coat and jacket inventory, while women can peruse the purses and pouches perched to the left of the main entrance. If you or your home is in need of a little bit of 60s-era cool, a trip to Portland Modern is in order.
Portland Modern is open daily from 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.
