From the outside, and from the moment you step inside, only one word passes through your mind when you see the Tiger Bar: “dive.” The blue exterior is nondescript, save a couple of stripes and tigers painted above the doorway. Inside, the interior design alternates between two colors: black and blacker. It’s like Spinal Tap helped them select their paint. Then you walk a little further, and you are in for a surprise. First, the whiff of food strikes your nose, and it’s startling. The place doesn’t smell of old beer or grease: it smells like sweet potato fries. That is a scent that never gets old. Then, you look to your left and right and see enormous booths, big enough to fit eight people with ease (at least until the middle person has to slide out to use the bathroom or get another drink). Finally, at the rear end of the room, you see the stage.
Tiger Bar’s greatest feature comes every Thursday night when the guys from Karaoke From Hell show up to rock the house. With a song library featuring nearly 500 songs spanning all genres from soul to metal, and eras spanning from the 1950s until now, Karaoke From Hell gives you a chance to truly live out your rock star dreams by being the lead vocalist for a real band. Yes, you will have bass, guitar, and drums backing you up as you try to bang out T. Rex’s “20th Century Boy” or the Beatles’ “Oh! Darling”. Not too shabby for a dive bar.
Still, Tiger Bar serves best on other nights as a place to stop by after or before you go to another bar, as the draw of sweet potato fries proves to be too much to fight. Tiger Bar brags of having the latest last call of anywhere in Portland, and it certainly has one of the latest happy hours. From 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. you can get discounts on Jack and Cokes and beer. Beyond that, you can catch strip bingo on Fridays and rotating live acts every Saturday.
Tiger Bar is open Tuesday through Friday from 5 p.m. until 2:30 a.m. and Saturday from 7 p.m. until 2:30 a.m.
