Northwest Portland families are privy to one of the most effective and expansive library systems in the nation. PDX Northwest helps locals find libraries in their area and highlight their various attractions, gatherings and history.
The Northwest Library is a member of the Multnomah County Library system and is conveniently located for Northwest Portland families to visit and browse for books, audio materials, periodicals and more. The Central Library houses considerably more vast archives, though there is a good selection of classic material on hand at this location as well
Opened in 2001, the building itself had previously been utilized for commercial space. Its history includes time spent as a winery, a pottery workshop and a pharmacy, though traces of these businesses and others now hide behind large stacks of bookshelves and electronic media. There are web terminals available for Multnomah County Library members to use, and members of the system do not need to register with this location to check out materials. Registering at the Northwest Library provides members with access to all libraries in the Multnomah County Library system, and it is free to do so.
Dogs may be walked to the library and leashed outside the doors, though only service animals are allowed in the building. Kids and teens will enjoy the selection of youth-oriented materials, and there are several sections dedicated to the bookworm in each family, be they senior, parent or child. Periodicals may be perused in the library, though current issues are not available for checkout.
A public meeting room with a 30-person occupancy is available at the library. It is offered on a first-come, first-served basis; those interested in using the room should contact the Multnomah County Library switchboard at 503.988.5402 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., or the automated line at 503.988.5246 during all hours.
Whether seeking a specific book or simply enjoying family time together in search of some peace and quiet, the Northwest Library is a great destination for Northwest Portland families. Members may use the online database through the library’s website to check for material availability, and an event finder application details public and private meetings going on at the library.
