Getting around Northwest Portland includes the usual options of driving, catching a bus, riding on a tram or simply hoofing it from destination to destination. However, it is also one of the most cycle-friendly places in the world, and PDX Northwest is here to help identify the resources suited to informing locals of how best to pedal through Rose City.
Pedal Bike Tours is one such resource that helps highlight some great local riding, as well as to establish a strong, supportive communities of cyclists in Northwest Portland and beyond. They provide tour guides that will take parties of cyclists on a themed ride, with various routes that feature stops at popular brewpubs, another with stops at great local coffeehouses and even a ride that will take cyclists on a tour of Portland’s greenest, LEED-certified buildings.
They provide riders with helmets, locks and lights for free, and provide bike rentals if needed. A bike may be rented for 24 hours following a tour for $15. Tour pricing starts at $49 for a guide (and tipping is encouraged), with longer and more complicated rides raising the price. Custom routes may be created between riders and guides, and there is 24-hour policy on cancellation refunds.
Rides typically last around three hours and include between 8 and 12 miles of riding. If the weather becomes prohibitively rainy, refunds will be offered on the day of the ride. If the weather becomes prohibitively wet, cold or dark for a rider’s liking, the cost of a tour guide will be prorated based on time spent on the tour.
Riders do not need to be in top cycling condition—this is Portland, so while there are hills on the tours it’s hardly the Tour de France—and anyone who can comfortably ride for a few hours with stops included on the way will do fine on a guided bike tour of the city. Kids are welcome to join on a ride, excepting for the Oregon Brewery Trail, which includes stops where guests must be of age to enter the premises during rests. Pets may be run along with the ride if specified for a custom ride, though they are not a regular part of any predetermined tour.
Pedal Bike Tours make a great resource for the cycling enthusiasts of Portland, and they area also well-versed in all things bicycling. Visit their website or contact them at 503.877.2453 today to learn more or schedule a tour soon!
The Pedal Bike Tours all begin at their office at 133 SW Second Avenue, where they host the rental shop that includes a boutique featuring bags, clothing and other accessories. Several TriMet bus lines stop two blocks west at Southwest Fifth Avenue and Southwest Pine Street, and there is a MAX stop one block southeast of the store as well. Street and lot parking is very limited in this busy section of Downtown Portland, so plan accordingly (and, of course, cycling to their address is encouraged).
