Northwest Portland parents face the daily challenges of living in an urban environment complete with large buildings, forest and park land, and thousands of strangers ebbing and flowing through the dozens of streets each day. It’s a full-time job raising a child in the area, and PDX Northwest is here to help identify resources and destinations that makes life easier for local parents.
WeVillage is just such a place, and it provides an indoor playground and top-notch childcare services. Located in the Pearl District, it features exemplary child caregivers who watch after tots of varying ages, from 2 years old to 12 years old. They are open from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on weekdays, with extended evening hours for Friday and Saturday night, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
The WeVillage staff is very child-savvy, as each member is trained in first aid, CPR and run through a rigorous background check. They attend ongoing lectures and classes to enhance their childcare skills, and the in-house preschool is run by a certified educator with more than a decade of experience. Events such as birthday parties may also be hosted on site for members, with up to 13 kids that will enjoy games, cake, snacks, juice and other amenities while playing on the indoor playground.
Convenience is one of the greatest aspects of WeVillage, as parents may make appointments to drop their children off and they also welcome drop-ins when a babysitter is needed in a pinch. All-day care (8 a.m. – 5 p.m.) is available to facilitate the lives of working parents in Northwest Portland, as are hourly rates for shorter visits.
Membership yields such benefits as lower hourly rates ($10 as opposed to $15), quicker check-in when dropping off the kids and an ongoing rapport with the staff to whom the kids are entrusted. Dining options are available from Whole Foods, Pizza Schmizza and Laughing Planet Cafe, though parents are welcome to provide snacks and meals of their own. Several other businesses in the area are partners with WeVillage, such as the Bar Method Gym and Ten 01 Restaurant, and they offer validation of service (similar to parking validation) that may be redeemed for reduced hourly rates for childcare. In effect, parents may grab a romantic dinner or hit the gym for a workout while knowing their children are in good hands and that the childcare is coming at a discounted rate.
WeVillage is a great destination for parents, and it also serves as a resource to answer parents’ questions about their child and about raising children in general. Members of the Modern Single Parents network will enjoy a 50 percent discount on membership packages, and the staff has plenty of experience and know-how when it comes to working with rambunctious little ones. Visit their website for additional pricing and services information, or call them at 503.935.5590 to schedule an appointment or learn more.
WeVillage is located at 424 NW 11th Avenue at an intersection served by TriMet Bus Line 17 and the Portland Streetcar. Street parking in the area is limited and metered, so plan accordingly when traveling with a child for drop-off.
